What is Bowen Therapy?

A gentle, effective way to treat a variety of ailments.

The technique

Bowen therapy was developed in Australia by Tom Bowen.

The practitioner

Joelle Meijer is a registered Bowen practitioner, licensed by CBBG. During her training, she had the privilege of treating many Kemptville residents as part of her case studies.

The treatment

A Bowen treatment usually lasts between 30 minutes and 1 hour. The client remains fully clothed, although we may ask you to take off heavy sweaters and the like. Unlike a massage, the Bowen practitioner makes small, gentle movements, followed each time by a pause of 2 or more minutes.

How can Bowen help me?

Bowen therapy is a holistic technique.

Bowen therapy aims to balance the body and stimulate its natural healing abilities. It involves gently stretching the fascia, which is the soft tissue that covers all your muscles and organs, to promote pain relief and improve mobility. Bowen therapy was created by Thomas Ambrose Bowen in Australia and is not a medical treatment, but a complementary or alternative therapy. Some of the benefits of Bowen therapy include:

  • Relief from pain, including sciatica, hip and pelvic pain, migraine headaches, back pain, neck pain, knee injuries, and pain caused by respiratory conditions, gastrointestinal disorders, or cancer treatment.
  • Reduced stress and improved emotional and mental well-being by activating the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for relaxation and digestion.
  • Enhanced mobility, flexibility, and sporting performance by increasing the range of motion and reducing muscle tension.
  • Increased energy and immune system by improving circulation, lymphatic drainage, and toxin elimination.
  • Improved posture, digestion, and nutrient absorption by aligning the body and stimulating the organs .

Bowen therapy is safe for everyone, from newborns to older adults.
